Dennis Lindey

Posted on April 17, 2017 at 9:17 AM by Ashley Fulps

For the past 6 years Dennis Lindey had one goal - to swim the length of the United States, a mere 2,060 miles. His motive? He was 53 years old, walking with a cane and 85 pounds overweight. He was scared of getting diabetes. For 20 plus years he was involved in kickboxing, he rock climbed all over the world, he wrecked his motorcycle, yet he was terrified of getting diabetes. He said “diabetes kills you slow, with rock climbing if you fall it’s instant.” So he started slow in the pool, having to lay his cane by the ladder to use while he walked to and from the pool.  He continued this trend the next 6 years swimming 5 days a week, 2 miles a day!

If you know Dennis, or have seen him in our Civic Center you are aware of his hair. See it in the picture? I’ve never asked him, but while I spoke to him I wanted to know why he colored his hair. He told me “Ecclesiastes 5:18-20. 18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them - for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil - his is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.”

Dennis loves to help people. He loves to encourage everyone, and loves to tell his journey. When I asked him what the greatest benefit was he said “I went from 53 years old, 85 pounds overweight and walking with a cane, to abs! I have abs! I had a guy 20 years younger than I am tell me how good I look. I’m almost 60!” We are so proud of Dennis and his accomplishments! If you see him around make sure to congratulate him for swimming across the United States!
