Chlorine
Gallatin’s drinking water is treated with chlorine in order to protect against microbial contaminants. Because there is little else in our water that produces a taste or odor, the chlorine is often the only taste remaining.
The small amount of chlorine added to water will not affect other pets (such as mammals and birds) and can be used regularly for watering and bathing animals.
Plants are not harmed by water treated with chlorine.
Taste & Odor
Chlorine taste and odor can be minimized by either letting water sit overnight, or using a carbon filter. To let the water sit overnight, collect a fresh sample in a clean container suitable for beverages, loosely cover or cap it, and store it in either the refrigerator or on the counter. Carbon filters are very common in either a pitcher or faucet device. It is best to use a filter that has been NSF certified for removal of chlorine.Pets & Plants
Chlorine and chloramine are toxic to fish, other aquatic animals, reptiles, and amphibians 7. Unlike humans and other household pets, these types of animals absorb water directly into the blood stream 7. Don’t keep these animals in water that contains these disinfectants. Chlorine can be removed from water by letting it sit out for a few days or by buying a product at your local pet store that removes the chlorine.
